Your query was rejected by the server at directory.yale.edu as being too broad. (Many CCSO phonebook servers implement a limit on the number of matching entries in order to prevent people from using overly broad queries to basically download the entire database, say for generating mailing lists.)

You need to narrow your query.

The easiest way is to be more specific about the name. For example, while a query for smith may be too broad on large servers, a query for john smith may work.

The other way to narrow a search is to add a condition based on fields other than the name field. For example

jones department=math*
smith address=farnsworth

These field=value queries can search only for a match on one word within the specified field. Also since values in these fields can be abbreviated, it is often helpful to use a trailing * wild card character in the value.
